A new “Did You Know” brings everyone up to date with how fast things are changing.. Mobile access to the Internet is booming, Dell uses Twitter to sell PCs, Obama raised 5 times as much money from small donations online as McCain did from old school banquets, traditional advertising is dying almost as fast as circulations are shrinking, but more people than ever before in history get their news online, digital advertising is growing almost as fast as computers are shrinking, and if your mind hasn’t been blown yet.. there will probably be an app store in your blood cells in another 15 years..

Online Video Is Still Driven By Relationships

Friday, September 25th, 2009

blogs are the biggest source of video discovery

Blogs are still the primary source of video discovery apparently, though I’m not quite sure how this new study from TubeMogul attempted to gather referral information from stats stingy networks like Facebook.

…blogs accounted for the vast majority of referrals with 44.2 percent of traffic coming from this source far outweighing traditional sources like search engines and even social media. In fact, search engine traffic only made up 6.1 percent of the overall traffic and social networking sites 2 percent. Social bookmarking sites accounted for 1.75 of the traffic, while email a mere 0.38 percent though this figure may not be entirely accurate.

The only sure fire way to have any effect on distribution to blogs is by managing relationships with influential bloggers.  Bloggers need fresh content that’s relevant to their readership, proving once again that the demand for public relations skills is not going anywhere.

Internet TV Gets a Remote

Monday, June 1st, 2009

I’m glad everyone is so excited about Google Wave.. I’m certainly looking forward to it, but there’s another development that in my book is equally significant, but is getting a little less media attention..

The remote is coming to Internet TV! This is the holy grail I’ve been waiting for, the missing piece to make online video more compelling than non-networked video.

The Associated Presss (AP) Needs to Go Extinct

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

My friend Christian interviewed the TN radio station that got in trouble with the Associated Press for embedding video from the AP YouTube Channel. This should never have erupted in the first place, but since we’re having a conversation about the AP, why don’t we really examine what it is - a highly politically motivated excuse for radio stations and newspapers to justify laying off reporters. As media consolidated and laid off talented journalists during the last decade, it became all too easy for media manipulators to blast their messages through a single channel. I’ll admit, I did it, and I’m not proud of it. AP is a dinosaur, I hope media outlets will realize that it is as toxic for them as Walmart was for small town economies. Only when its gone or has been rendered toothless will media outlets get back to the business of creating content themselves. There’s no money or unique audience in syndicated news. The new media landscape is all about unique voices and targeted audiences… which we should all be grateful that the leadership at the AP doesn’t get.
